Volcanoes & Vines - New Zealand
New Zealand’s North Island is a wonderland of volcanic cones. From Rangitoto, lying in the Hauraki Gulf to Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro which comprise the Tongariro National Park and last but not least, the perfectly formed peak of Mt Taranaki. In the Bay of Plenty you’ll find White Island, an active marine volcano. In contrast, the fertile soil and warm sunshine of Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa makes for perfect grape growing conditions and consequently some of the country’s finest wines. Days 1-2 Auckland On arrival at Auckland airport enjoy a private transfer to your hotel. Rangitoto is Auckland’s youngest volcanic cone and there are actually 48 of them in Auckland alone! It’s easily reached by ferry if you want to go under your own steam but we’ve included a guided experience. The summit walk takes you through lava fields and the world’s largest pohutakawa forest, to the island peak for panoramic harbour and city views. Day 3 Whakatane (296 kms) The active marine volcano of White Island lies just-off shore. Here you’ll be able to get up close to roaring steam vents, boiling hot volcanic streams and an incredible lake of steaming acid. We’ve included a guided experience by boat from Whakatane but helicopter tours are also available. Days 4-5 Ruapehu (269 kms) Presided over by three volcanoes, this is part of the Tongariro National Park World Heritage site, New Zealand’s first national park. The hiking in this region is nothing short of spectacular and we’ve included a half day volcanic explorer hike. But the real jewel in the Tongariro crown, is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing which quite rightly, is regarded as one of the finest one day walks, anywhere in the world. Days 6-7 Hawkes Bay (250 kms) Many of Hawkes Bay’s 30-plus wineries and artisan producers can be explored on two wheels along the flat, easy riding trails, so you can leave the car behind. You can even arrange to have wine purchases delivered to your accommodation so you don’t have to carry them with you. Day 8 Martinborough (271 kms) The charming town of Martinborough is famed for its Pinot Noir and there are numerous vineyards within walking distance of the village square.
