Hotel Meganisi - Meganisi
Katomeri, where the hotel is situated, has a few tavernas where the chances are that a visitor will be offered a glass of ouzo and a game of cards. The only other village on the main road (a misnomer if ever there was one) is Spartohori, an immaculate small settlement of whitewashed houses, half buried in a riot of bougainvillea and jasmine, with outstanding views across to Lefkada and Skorpios.
The Hotel Meganisi, run by the charming Dimitris and Christina Politis, with the help of their various sons and daughters-in-law, complements the spirit of the island perfectly. Attractively designed in a traditional style, the guest bedrooms are simple but comfortable. All have air conditioning, en-suite shower rooms and balconies/terraces with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. A meal in the hotel dining room is always a memorable occasion, with delicious local dishes lovingly prepared by Christina.
Other tavernas can be found near the quay in Vathi, just one kilometre away, and the nearest beach is about thirty minutes walk from the hotel. For those seeking to work up an appetite there are fantastic walking routes throughout the island. For the truly energetic, footpaths, rough in places, extend down the middle of the narrow spine of land to the southeast. Any aches and pains from the walk can be soothed away in the hotel’s swimming pool.
The hardest decision of a holiday at the Hotel Meganisi might well be whether to tear yourself away from this haven in time for your return flight home.
