It’s All Greek To Me!

If you are looking for sun and sand in a relaxed atmosphere with good local food and wine then we can think of nowhere better to go than the Greek islands, especially those that are less well known but still offer direct flights from Manchester.

Our favourite small Greek island is undoubtedly Skiathos, just 7 miles long and 4 miles wide with a bus service at which every stop reveals a beautiful beach. You may well recognise the harbour of Skiathos Town from the film “Mamma Mia” which was shot entirely on Skiathos and its neighbour Skopelos, just a short ferry ride away.

Another favourite is Kefalonia, the most mountainous of the Greek islands, yet still offering wonderful sandy beaches as well as spectacular scenery. This too is well known as the setting for a best-selling book and film: “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.”

If you have ever cruised in this part of the world the stunning arrival and ascent to Thera, the capital of Santorini, will surely be one of your highlights. The other side of the island offers (black sand) beachfront hotels on this, the island that is rumoured to be the site of Atlantis.

Of the mainstream islands Corfu is the greenest with a wealth of history, including British rule in the 19th century. Corfu Town is a delight with labyrinthine streets ensuring that you are never sure what shops or tavernas await you around the next corner. Bridge players can enjoy this island next May with our friends from Diamond Bridge offering a two week holiday at the Corfu Chandris Hotel.
